I first discovered these guys back in the early 90's while I was working Wax Trax (one of Denver's legendary record stores). Someone brought in some CD's to sell and in their stack was a CD by The Hamsters titled Electric Hamsterland. It had a cute little picture of a hamster dressed up in his Jimi Hendrix best on the cover. I thought it would be a comedy album or a spoof on Hendrix of some kind. I popped it into the CD player and proceeded to get blown away! These guys meant business! They were serious and played some of the best Hendrix covers I've ever heard! I have been a fan ever since. Unfortunately... They are based out of the UK and only came to the US for a brief tour in 1991 (that I missed). I would love to have seen them live but never got the opportunity. Sadly, they have now retired. But... I soaked up every Hamsters recording I could find on Ebay and anywhere else I could find them. Their videos were only released in PAL format and that was in the days when we couldn't play PAL here in the US, so it took awhile to find copies that had been transferred.

Now, through the miracle of modern technology, I would like to turn on all of you to The Hamsters, one of my favorite bands that unfortunately, never made it to achieve success here in the United Snakes Of America, but they should have! These guys are incredible! Not only do they perform some incredible Hendrix covers, they are also well known for their ZZ Top covers (The Verminator Tour!) as well as some very cool originals.

I will be posting some more clips of The Hamsters in the next couple of days. I hope you will take some time to check them out. I think you'll be impressed! This clip is from their Rodents Rock The Reich video that, I believe, is now out of print (although you can occasionally find used copies on Ebay or Amazon). This was from a German TV broadcast in May of 1997. This jam starts out with one of their originals. A catchy little guitar number called The Walk. They follow that with the Hamster/Hendrix version of The Star Spangled Banner, and finish it up with Purple Haze! Pretty cool! You should definately watch this one!

Turn it up to 11. It will sound better that way!
