This was a flight that affected my understanding about FAs and service industry in China. I ended up chatting with a flight attendant who really gave me an interesting glimpse into the life of a Chinese flight attendant. One of the things we ended up chatting about was a rather (in)famous? review by a blogger about the first class service onboard China Southern's A380, and the subsequent demotion of several of the first class FAs. One of the issues that was brought up in the review was the fact some FAs slept in the first class seats. I found out from her that often there are not enough sleeping space for FAs, and so rather than napping uncomfortably in the jumpseats (which is what I saw on this flight), they choose the empty first class seats. It turns out China Southern and other airline companies in China are very much aware of their brand issues, such as food, and often monitor reviews for issues related to the flight. However, instead of changing the food for the better, often the blame seemed to be placed on the FA's service. Another thing I learned was that FAs in China often face litigation and complaints from passengers for mistakes or issues that are not really their fault. For example, I heard one court case in which a passenger fell off the jump seat and hurt her back despite instructions not to sit in a jump seat. She sued the airline even though the FAs massaged her back and she told them everything was okay. Combined with the fact that China is one of worst countries for flight delays and FAs have been beaten by passengers who are angry about delays, these details really gave me an appreciation for their work especially facing the rather stressful skies in China.
