In this gardening video, I explain how to plant a fig tree directly in the ground showing all the steps to successfully plant a fig tree from pot to ground and how to grow fig trees.
In the second part of the video I show you how to propagate a fig tree using the air layering method to create an identical clone of the maiden fig tree, an exact copy of the maiden fig tree.

So starting off with how to plant a fig tree in the ground.
The first step to planting a fig tree in the ground is to dig a very big hole, but to maximise fig production you need to restrict root growth.
I had an old concrete BBQ lying around so I used this to create a large pot in the hole to restrict root growth, the hole I dug was 80 cm by 70 cm and 60 cm deep and the bottom was sealed with a broken concrete portion of the BBQ to allow drainage. Fig trees are a thirsty tree for water but they do not like their roots to be constantly standing in water.
Now the fig tree I planted can grow to 7 meters tall, which for me is too large so by restricting the root ball I'm hoping the tree will not get any bigger than 5 meters.
With regards too soil types, fig trees are not fussy, in that they can be grown in loam, clay or sandy soils. Fig trees do however prefer slightly acidic soils to do best.
When you take the fig tree out of the pot ready to be planted into the ground tease out the roots at the bottom to encourage strong root growth away from the existing root ball.
I like a natural approach to growing my fig trees so rather than shop-bought fertilizers I tend to use rabbit droppings to feed my fig trees.
So after the hole is prepared I back fill with the soil taken when digging the whole mixed with shop-bought compost to increase drainage and the rabbit droppings all mixed together.
Before removing the fig tree to plant in the ground make sure you give the fig tree a good water to enable the fig tree to be removed from the pot with ease.
Once the fig tree is removed from the pot tease out the root ball to enable the fig tree to spread out its roots once planted in the ground.
When planting a fig tree in the ground you can either plant it at the same level it was in the pot or slightly deeper.
Once planted as always give the fig tree a good water to avoid shock.

I have tried leaving the air layer for 6 -8 weeks on the selected branch but found the root development sparse, my preference as seen within this video is to air layer the fruit tree for 3 - 4 months ideally.
