A one-to-one mapping from schematic to stick diagram is not always optimal. In fact, using intelligent approaches we can use common sources and drains to share diffusion tracks between transistors. Because of design rules, avoiding any layer to layer contacts can save a lot of area. The Euler path approach is a systematic way to find the minimum number of diffusion tracks that can implement a certain schematic. At least when it works!
