Music for the Soul #10 – “Christ is All”
(Words: Herbert Booth)

Music is the language of the soul, it has a unique and special ability to connect directly to the soul to bring joy, soothe sorrows, relieve stress and stir the emotions.

The soul of The Salvation Army undoubtedly found its voice in Herbert Booth(1862-1926), who had a genius for expressing himself in music penned many songs including these well known words which were published in ‘The Musical Salvationist’(NOV 1887) and are still in our songbook today.

V2.
Around me in the world I see
No joy that turns my soul from thee;
Its honours fade and fall;
But with thee, though I mount the cross,
I count it gain to suffer loss,
For thou art all in all.

Christ is all, yes, all in all,
My Christ is all in all.

It can be so easy to try and find happiness in everything that the world has to offer. Jesus promised us abundant and abiding joy. Sometimes we feel joyously confident that Jesus is Saviour and Friend. Other times we feel battle scarred and more than a little weary. This song echoes Paul’s  instructions in Colossians which give us hope and confidence for now and eternity.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things………Christ is all, and is in all.” Colossians 3:1-2,11b
