. Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are the stem cells that give rise to other blood cells. This process is called hematopoiesis.
The hematopoietic stem cells are of various types including, pluripotent stem cells, multipotent stem cells, oligo-potent stem cells, and unipotent stem cells.
Dr. Mobeen Syed explains that pluripotent stem cells can not make the whole organism.
They can make multiple cell types, but a part of the whole organism. The parent stem cells within the bone marrow, which make all the blood cells are pluripotent stem cells.
Multipotent stem cells make lesser types of cells than pluripotent stem cells.
The pluripotent stem cells make myeloid and lymphoid cells in the bone marrow.
Myeloid progenitor cells are multipotent stem cells. They only make the cells of the myeloid lineage. Megakaryocytes, erythrocytes, granulocytes, and monocytes are the cells of myeloid lineage.
Lymphoid progenitor cells are also multipotent stem cells. They give rise to T and B lymphocytes.
Granulocyte stem cells give rise to eosinophils, basophils, and neutrophils.
Unipotent stem cells give rise to only one type of blood cells. For example, in the neutrophil lineage, committed cells which make neutrophils refresh themselves and make more neutrophils.
The primary hematopoietic stem cells are not totipotent. They are pluripotent stem cells responsible for the production of the blood cells, not all the body cells.
Multipotent and oligo-potent are sorts of the same things.
Unipotent stem cells give rise to only one type of blood cells.
