Staying in touch with your family and friends can be hard if you can’t see each other in person, but Google Duo can help make it easier. Watch this video to learn the basics of using Google Duo.

You can download the Google Duo app for free from the App Store on iOS or the Google Play Store on Android devices. One of the great things about Duo is that it’s available on all kinds of smartphones.
You’ll need to allow Duo to access to your device’s camera, microphone, and contact list in order to make calls. Similar to some other popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, you need to put in your phone number to get started with Duo. You’ll be sent a text message with a 6-digit verification code. Enter the code you received to verify your account. Once that’s done, you’re ready to start using Duo.
Upon first opening the app, you may see that some of your phone contacts have already been added to your Google Duo contact list. If someone you know has registered for Duo using a phone number that’s saved to your device, that will automatically be detected and you’ll see them listed here. If you want to add another contact, scroll down to the Invite to Duo section. There you’ll see a list of the rest of your contacts saved to your device that have not registered for Duo yet. Tap the name of the contact you want to invite. Then tap Compose an Invitation. Then send your invitation through text message. Once that contact has registered for Duo, they should automatically be added to your Duo contact list.
To make a call with Google Duo, tap the search bar and type in the name of the person you’d like to call. Tap their name when it appears in your search results. Then choose either Video Call or Voice Call. Once you tap a call button, just wait for your friend to answer. If they don’t pick up, you’ll have the option to send them a message instead. When your friend does answer, you can enjoy your conversation with them. The in-call controls are quite simplistic. Tap the video camera icon to turn your video on and off, the microphone icon to mute or unmute your microphone, and the curved arrows to switch between your device’s front and back cameras. Tapping the three dots in the bottom right corner will give you more options, such as connecting to a Bluetooth audio device, enable portrait mode, lighting adjustments, and other effects. When you’re ready to end your call, tap the red phone icon.
