The ticking sound in the first part of the piece is made by using a technique called "Col legno," in which the wooden part of the bow of a stringed instrument is used to strike the string. It is used in classical music such as the 5th movement of Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique", "Mars" from Holst's suite "The Planets", and the 2nd movement of Rachmaninoff's "Symphony No. 2 Op. 27", so please listen to them.
