In this video, we are going to talk about the Angle of Incidence (A.O.I) in aviation,
You will learn what it is, the difference compared to the angle of attack, and how this angle varies within the Aircraft wing.
In order to understand in full this topic, we need to talk about the longitudinal axis and the chord line.
The longitudinal axis of an aircraft is the imaginary line that runs from the tail to the nose passing through the center of the fuselage, the Chord Line is the imaginary straight line that runs from the leading edge to the trailing edge of an Airfoil.
The Angle of Incidence is the angle between the Longitudinal Axis of the Aircraft and the wing chord line.
This angle is fixed, however, the angle of incidence can decrease from the wing root to the tip, this is called wing washout.
By having a smaller angle of incidence at the wingtips you will have a smaller angle of attack (angle between the wing chord line and the relative airflow) for a given phase of flight.
This is so mainly for two reasons:
1. Compensation for early stall due to a higher level of loading experienced at the wingtips.
2. Flight controls effectiveness, due to the higher angle of incidence the wing root will stall first, and since the flight controls are normally located at the wingtips you will still be able to control the plane at the early stage of the stall.
