Rhone American Cemetery

Rhone American Cemetery, near the foothills of the Alps in southern France, is the final resting place for more than 850 American service members who died in World War II.
The location of the 12-acre cemetery is along the historic route of the U.S. 7th Army as it drove from the French Riviera up the Rhone Valley in 1944. Most of the soldiers buried here died during those Allied liberation efforts.
The perimeter of the oval-shaped cemetery is lined with trees, with a fountain at its center and a memorial chapel opposite the entrance that is accessible via John Kennedy Boulevard.
An angel of peace sculpture adorns the face of the memorial, with 12 words inscribed beneath it: "We who lie here died that future generations might live in peace."
Just nearby, on the Tablets of the Missing, are the names of nearly 300 other service members. Their bodies were never found but their sacrifices are remembered every day.

The American Battle Monuments Commission honors America's fallen service members and their stories at 26 overseas cemeteries and 32 monuments.
