The Pros to being a COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant) and pros of being an OTR (Registered Occupational Therapist) from the perspective of a COTA/ OT student. (See summary below)

Pros of being a COTA:
1. Cost of school is much less for OTA
2. Conducting treatments: Less paperwork and more patient interaction.
3. Autonomy over treatments is still given.
4. COTAs can pave their way to jobs in particular settings
5. OTA Schools are somewhat less competitive
6. COTA can do other roles as well, such as managers, directors, and business owners (as can OTRs)

Pros of being an OTR
1. Increase in pay ~$10,000-$25,000
2. Doing the evaluations! If you like doing them, this is a bonus. You get to create the goals as well.
3. Some places hire more OTRs than COTAs

Something I did not say, but have to note is independence is a PRO for OTR: OTRs can work anywhere without an additional person being staffed first (a COTA needs an OTR on staff to conduct treatments. That person does not need to be physically there with them, but hired on staff and routinely in communication with them).
