Pope Francis has met with the spiritual leader of most of the world’s Shia Muslims, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. The two men met at the Grand Ayatollah’s residence in the city of Najaf, a three-hour car journey to the south of the capital Baghdad.
Pope Francis calls for peace and unity in his speech at Ur
After the meeting with the Grand Ayatollah, Pope Francis headed back north to the ancient city of Ur which is the birthplace of the Abraham, patriarch who lived about 1900 years prior to the incarnation of Jesus Christ and who is revered as a founding figure by both Christians, Muslims and Jews.
Pope Francis celebrates Holy Eucharist in Chaldean rite
Saturday also saw Pope Francis offer Holy Mass Pope at Chaldean Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Baghdad. In doing so, he became the first-ever Pope to celebrate Holy Mass in Chaldean rite.
UNESCO welcomes papal visit to Mosul
Finally, Sunday March the 7th will see Pope Francis travel north to visit the cities of Bakhdida and Mosul. Bakhdida, also known as Qaraqosh, is situated 20 miles southeast of the city of Mosul.
