Find out why bonsai enthusiasts find Zelkova so fun to work with! Eric works on a batch of seven two-year old Zelkova, demonstrating how to trim roots and branches, and pot them up for another year.

00:00:27 Eric removes the trees from the flat, rough cutting their roots apart to separate them.

00:00:44 Eric explores the junction of the roots with the trunk.

00:01:15 What to do if you identify any problematic roots. As part of the Elm family, these plants respond well to fairly aggressive root trimming, and really, all bonsai work (that's part of what makes them so much fun!)

00:02:43 Eric wants all the roots to come out on the same plane, so he examines them from 360 degrees.

00:03:37 Watch Eric trim the roots on six more trees. So zen...

00:06:19 Eric cuts back branches.

00:08:00 Wiring time! Eric creates some sexy winter silhouettes.

00:12:09 Repotting, including wiring the root base to secure the trees in the soil.

00:13:01 Eric lays out the roots to ensure their placement is flat (on the same plane) to encourage the type of growth he desires.

00:13:16 Watering

00:13:23 Quick explanation on some of the work - how Eric anchored the trees into the soil, for example.

00:14:30 Making a three-dimensional broom shape. Eric has had success growing a few to middle age (15 years) - have you had any success? Let us know in the comments below!
