The stem cell collection from the donor can be of two types. One is the bone marrow stem, cell collection. The second one is peripheral stem cell collection. So typically in the bone marrow stem cell collection, what is done is the donor is taken to the operation theater, general anesthesia is administered, the stem cells are collected from the iliac bone. Now, this may take about 2 – 3 hours. Largely, it is a very safe procedure. There are just theorical risks because of the general anesthesia. Now in peripheral blood stem cell collection, what is done is the donor is given a growth factor for about 4 -5 days and he is then taken on an anapheresis machine and the blood from the donor will go into the anapheresis machine  . The stem cells are collected. The remaining part of the blood will be given back to the patient right there in the closed circuit. So here, general anesthesia is not needed and it is just akin to giving platelet donations for example, and largely the only sort term issue with stem cell collection for the donor are when we give growth factor, some of them may have bone pain, they may have headache, but they are well controlled with medicines that one gives and from the bone marrow collection , the hemoglobin may drop a little and  which we usually give them hematric support and then they have pain from,t he leg bones, the stem cells are collected. But otherwise there are no serious short or long term consequences to the donor, because in a transplantation procedure, donor safety and donor care is of paramount importance. Would not want you to do anything that would harm the donor in a long or short term.
