2018 Yamaha MT-07 First Ride Review | Ultimate Motorcycling

Since its introduction in 2014,
Since its introduction in 2014, the Yamaha MT-07 quickly won over the hearts of new and veteran riders a like. It's peppy 689cc "cross-plane concept" parallel twin engine has been teasing grins out of us at Ultimate Motorcycling from the moment we laid our hands on it.
This year marks a change to the beloved MT-07 in that it will now feature the same designation as the rest world market, moving away from its previous designation, the FZ-07.
Beyond a name change, several other updates have taken place as well. Riders walking into dealerships can expect a 30% larger saddle, providing a bit more comfort. The relatively neutral riding position, remains unchanged.
When it comes to looks, the 2018 Yamaha MT-07 does take a noticeable step towards the edgy side of things, with a blacked out look. It could be that the MT-07 has reached his teenage years and decided to tap into the unending well that is teenage angst, but for us, it equates to a motorcycle with more blacked out bits, giving it a more aggressive look.
Other changes come in the form of performance as the non-adjustable KYB fork and spring-preload and rebound damping adjustable KYB shock have received heavier valving, as well as heavier spring rates. Overall, this creates a stiffer feel, which retains much of the MT-07 compliance and stability, with the added bonus of greater confidence at high-speeds. New riders need not fret, it's still just as comfortable as before.
Managing Editor Kelly Callan packed her bags and traveled to beautiful Marbella Spain to ride the revamped 2018 Yamaha MT-07. While she didn't get a lot of time in the saddle due to heavy rain, she was able to share some of her thoughts in this first ride review.
