In this video we show how to model Triboelectric Nanogenerators (TENG) by means of COMSOL Multiphysics. First, we explain the fundamentals of the TENG systems such as the concepts of operation, working modes, effective parameters, and output characteristics. Then, we consider an important working mode namely sliding-mode TENG, and we develop a model for this case. We show how to properly define boundary conditions to find the open-circuit voltage (Voc) and short-circuit transferred charge (Qsc) from the simulation results. In fact, the Voc and Qsc are the two main output characteristics of the TENG which can be furthered used for finding other outputs of the TENG from mathematical models. We compare our results with the results of a reference from which we have selected our model parameters. We show that our results including electric potential distribution, Voc, and Qsc are exactly the same as the results of the reference proving the validity of our model. This video is very useful for the design, characterization, and optimization of sliding-mode TENG systems for energy harvesting and sensing applications. In the future video, we will expand our modeling on other working modes of the TENG.
