It has been some time since I first splashed the Skiff. After spending months rebuilding the boat from top to bottom. Finally getting it in the water and it not getting up on plane was a kick to the gut. After a week at the beach trying to fix the issue with no success. I was at my wits end. I needed to take a step back and take a break from it for a little bit. It was that or set it on fire! Which I was not going to do this far along. I apologize for the delayed update on the skiff build’s progress.
For those who are just now hearing about the rebuild and my issue with the motor. I started completely rebuilding my Carolina Skiff from top to bottom. The foam core was saturated with water and it all had to come out. After months of rushing to get it done in time for a beach trip. I finished it at midnight the night before leaving. When I finally splashed it the motor would not get the boat up on plane. Ran beautifully, but no power.
Once I got home from the beach. I spent hours reading and researching what it could be. I started diving into the ignition system. Just trying to find the issue. I did find that my stator was not charging the battery at all. Which I suspected after installing the digital voltage display on the dash. The power pack tested  just inside spec. Along with one coil being lower that the others. After much debate I decided to replace it all.
My goal all along with this build was to have a boat I could do anything and go anywhere anytime. My first option was a new motor, but the motor has been a champ all it’s life till now. Therefore I decided to spend a little money upfront and have a reliable motor. As a pose to going in debt for a new one.
After all the work and time spent on the motor it did the same thing when I took it to the lake. I am literally in the same slow boat I was in to begin with. Although I did fix the stator. As well as hopefully avoiding other issues down the road. It still won’t get up on plane.
As soon as I have time I am going to go back to the drawing board. Now that I know the ignition system is 100%. It has got to be in the carburetors or something fuel related. I rebuilt the carbs on the rainy days when I couldn’t fiberglass. Maybe I got the wrong kit, bad floats, or just missed something. I will find it. I am not going to give up until I’m flying down the lake in pursuit of a big catfish!
