Sea Fever - A poem by John Masefield.
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

About The Poem - Salt-Water Poems and Ballads includes "Sea-Fever" and "Cargoes", two of Masefield's best known poems. "Sea-Fever" first appeared in Salt-Water Ballads -- Masefield's first volume of poetry published in 1902 in London by Grant Richards. In The Collected Poems of John Masefield the opening line was changed to the text now more commonly anthologised: "I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky". The first lines of the second and third stanzas retained the form "I must down to the seas again. "Sea-Fever" has been set to music by many composers, the most famous version is by John Ireland.

About The Poet - John Edward Masefield (1878 -- 1967) was an English poet and writer, and Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until his death in 1967. He was born in Herefordshire, England. Many of Masefield's short poems were set as art songs by British composers of the time.
