Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a gram-positive, soil-dwelling bacterium known for its insecticidal properties. It produces crystal proteins toxic to certain insects, making it widely used in agriculture as a biological pesticide. These proteins, known as δ-endotoxins or Bt toxins, act upon ingestion by the larvae of various pests, disrupting their digestive systems and leading to their death.

Bt has been employed in crop protection for decades, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical insecticides. Its specificity to certain insect groups minimizes harm to non-target organisms, including humans and beneficial insects. Bt-based pesticides have been pivotal in integrated pest management strategies, promoting sustainable agriculture practices. Genetic engineering has also been applied to introduce Bt genes into crops directly, creating Bt crops that express the insecticidal proteins, providing inherent pest resistance.
