According to legend, he was a knight who fought heroically during the siege of Lisbon, alongside the Christian forces under the command of King D. Afonso Henriques (1112–1185)
Upon noticing the opening of a door in the Castle of the Moors , he attacked it individually, sacrificing his life by crossing his own body through the doorway , as a way of preventing it from being closed by the defenders.
This heroic gesture allowed him to gain the necessary time for the arrival of his companions, who were able to penetrate the castle . In his honor, this access became known as Porta de Martim Moniz .
