Chiang Mai is the largest city in Northern Thailand and the second largest city in Thailand. One of Thailand's most important cultural centers, the city is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. Located 700 km north of Bangkok, Chiang Mai has a population of 1.2 million (2022) and is home to the highest mountains in the country. The city was founded on the banks of the Ping River, an important tributary of the Chao Phraya River, which also passes through Bangkok.
