Water forms cover about 75% of the Earth’s surface. It is important in sustaining life. Bodies of water or water forms include oceans, seas, bays, lakes, rivers, streams, springs, waterfalls, and ponds.

An ocean is the largest body of saltwater. It is home to many kinds of marine
animals like whales, sharks, turtles, and dolphins. There are five oceans in the world: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Antarctic Ocean. The Pacific Ocean is the world’s largest and deepest body of water. It covers almost one-third of Earth’s Surface. The Philippines is located on the western part of the Pacific Ocean.

A sea is also a huge body of saltwater, but it is smaller than an ocean. It is wide and deep and provides home to many sea creatures. The South China Sea, Celebes Sea, Sulu Sea, and Philippine Sea surround the Philippines. Different kinds of plants and animals live in seas.

A bay is smaller than a sea or an ocean. It is a body of saltwater that is partly enclosed by land or a wide stretch of coastline. The Manila Bay in Metro Manila is known for its beautiful sunset view.

A lake is a body of freshwater surrounded by land. In some lakes, water comes from a river. The Taal Lake in Batangas is one of the tourist attractions in the Philippines.

A river is a body of water that may flow into a lake, another river, or the sea. Water in a river flows freely until it reaches the open sea. The St. Paul Underground River in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, is the longest underground river in the world. The Cagayan River in Cagayan Valley is the longest and largest river in the Philippines.

A stream is a body of water that smaller than a river. It contains less water than a river does. Water from a mountain flows to lowlands through a stream.

A spring is another body of fresh water. The water from a spring comes from the ground. A spring may be hot or cold. Los Baños, Laguna, is famous for its hot springs. Many claim that hot springs have therapeutic effects.

A waterfall is a body of freshwater that falling from a high place. Pagsanjan Falls in Laguna and Maria Cristina Falls in Mindanao are not only tourist attractions but are also sources of electricity in these places.

A pond is smaller than a lake. It is usually found in open spaces. Some ponds are built by people to raise fish and other aquatic animals like, bangus, tilapia, prawns, and crabs.
