Born on May 1, 1924 in the village of Leonovo, Moscow Region.
In 1943 he entered the First Moscow Medical Institute, and in 1949 he was enrolled in graduate school at the department of forensic medicine of this institute, defended his thesis “Forensic medical assessment of hearing damage”, worked as an assistant, and since 1961 - associate professor.
In 1957–58 A.P. Gromov was sent to the University of Tirana (Albania), where he organized the Department of Forensic Medicine and read a course of lectures for students of medical and law faculties. From 1961 to 1966 A.P. Gromov combined work at the department with work at the University of Friendship of Peoples. Patrice Lumumba, first as dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and then as Vice-Chancellor for Research, while also in charge of the course of forensic medicine at the same university.
In 1963 A.P. Gromov defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences (topic marked "for official use"), a year later he was awarded the academic title of professor. In 1964 he was elected head of the department of forensic medicine at the 1st Moscow Medical Institute, head of the department until 1990. Under his leadership, the department since 1968 has been working to improve the skills of teachers of the departments of forensic medicine of medical institutions of the Union republics; a standard program for the faculty of advanced training has been developed.
In 1979 prof. A.P. Gromov was appointed director of the Research Institute of Forensic Medicine (NIISM of the Ministry of Health of the USSR) and chief forensic expert of the USSR Ministry of Health. He worked in these positions until 1995. Since 1980, he has been Chairman of the Scientific Council on Forensic Medicine of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1982 he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.
The main direction of scientific research of the department - experimental modeling in forensic traumatology - is being developed using modern methods, including mathematical modeling. On this topic, A.P. Gromov has published a large number of works, he is the editor of the collection "Modeling of injuries of the head, chest and spine." A.P. Gromov and other employees of the department received a certificate of authorship for the "Device for modeling blows inflicted on the human body."
He is the author of more than 300 scientific works, including textbooks, 30 monographs, brochures. Under his editorship and with his participation, a number of manuals and collections of scientific papers have been prepared. The monograph "Medical Deontology and the Responsibility of Medical Workers" was awarded the highest award of VDNKh - "Diploma of Honor" and republished in Italy. Under his leadership, 2 doctoral and 14 master's theses were prepared (Another source. More than 13 doctoral and 25 master's theses were defended under his leadership.).
In 1970, he wrote the Lecture Course on Forensic Medicine and the Program on Forensic Medicine. Edited by A.P. Gromov in 1971, the "Practicum" on forensic medicine was published; he wrote textbooks that allow you to apply the programmed control of students' knowledge; lecture "Methodological problems of forensic medicine" (1973) was published.
Prof. A.P. Gromov is a prominent scientist and organizer of scientific, educational, methodological and expert work, a highly qualified specialist, lecturer and teacher. The main topic of scientific research is the development of issues of forensic traumatology. He is actively developing a new scientific direction in forensic medicine - trauma biomechanics, which made it possible to establish patterns of influence of physical parameters of mechanical action on the morphology of injuries. A.P. Gromov established a new mechanism of closed craniocerebral injury, the main factor of which is the deformation of the skull bones. These studies are summarized in the manual "Forensic Traumatology" (1977), edited and co-authored by Prof. A.P. Gromov, as well as in the monograph "Biomechanics of Trauma" (1979)
The second direction, fruitfully developed by prof. A.P. Gromov - issues of medical ethics and deontology, on which he prepared 3 monographs and a number of brochures. A.P. Gromov did a great deal of work to improve the organization, coordination and planning of research in forensic medicine and forensic chemistry in the Scientific Council for Forensic Medicine of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.
