This word is responsible for your ability to hit clean consistent shots, develop flowing movement, and keep you in the moment.

and That word is VHML.  That’s V-H-M-L

What does it mean?

Well, the V stands for visualize, the H stands for hit, the M stands for Move, and the L stands for Look.

This was created by my good friend Lenny Schloss who developed Billy Jean King’s Eye Coach here.

Incidentally, if you want one of these or you want to get one as a gift for the holidays… I’ll leave you a discount code down below.

Now, VHML…what typically happens is we get this out of order when we’re playing.

We tend to visualize our shot pretty well… but we normally look before we hit and move after we look.

The result? Well, we lose our concentration at contact, we shank a lot of balls, and our movement gets locked up.  There’s no flow to it.

So here’s how you can fix it.  I’ll demonstrate on the trusty eye coach here, so you can really visualize what I’m doing.

So I’m going to visualize the shot I want to hit… I’m going to HIT the ball… I’m going to move towards my next destination, wherever that point may be… and finally, I’m going to look.

Now I’ll show you doing this on repeated forehands.  Obviously… you can’t see the visualizing part, but I’m visualizing the target I want to hit the ball towards in my mind.

Then I’m hitting the ball… then I’m moving… I’m taking a step or two… and THEN I look.

Now, without even having met you yet… If you’re like me… I can guarantee you’ll have issues with this… AT FIRST.  Because your’e training your brain to do something new… or in a new sequence in this case.

I had a live lesson with Lenny over Skype with this bad boy… and I swear to you… within 5 minutes of practicing this… I had better balance… I was more focused at contact… I was moving better… and was hitting cleaner

and sure enough, next time I went out to the courts… I can’t tell you how much it calmed me down… because I was no longer worried about what my opponent was doing.  I visualized my shot, I hit it keeping my head still, then I moved… and THEN I looked.

As a result, my shots were cleaner… and overall much better because I wasn’t yanking my head out of the hit, throwing my balance off and getting all nervous.

And every time I do this with one of my private clients, they’re blown away by how much it calms them down and improves the quality of their shots.

Now, if you have an eye coach… this is how you can practice this sort of in progressions.  You can do it with a friend feeding you balls too if ya don’t have one. And with each of these steps I’d recommend doing shadow swings… and then taking it either to the eye coach, or your friend feeding you balls, or the ball machine.

1. So in step 1 you’re gonna Hit your forehand, and leave your head still over the point of contact.  This one is all about balance.  So just hit the ball, and leave it over the point of contact.  And by the way you’ll want to do this every single day if you can.  5 minutes a day is all you need, and I guarantee your strokes are going to be cleaner… it’s gonna be on fire.
2. Step 2, You want to visualize, hit, move… then look. VHML our favorite 4 letter word now. So I hit the ball, take 1 step… and then I look up towards my imaginary hitting partner or opponent.  This will take some practice, because if you’ve never done it… well, you’re doing something new.  By the way… if you’re doing these on a ball machine… it’s the same process.  We’re just using the eye coach here, because it’s easy for you to visualize.
3. Step 3 is if you’re using an eye coach.  IT won’t make much sense if you don’t have one… but it’s a nice intermediate step to a full on rally.  So here we’re going to hit on 3 as the ball returns… in rhythms… looking up in between hits.  So if you’ll notice here, My eye is steady at the point of contact… I finish my shot… THEN I look.  And you’ll want to do the same thing.  Here it is again, head still at contact.. finish the shot… then look.
4. Step 4 now we’re going to put it all together… so you’re going to visualize the shot, hit the ball, move, and finally look.  And you can do this on the eye coach like I’m doing here, isolating one side… OR you can do it alternating sides.  And then of course, if you’re working with a ball machine, you can do it there, then rallying with a friend… and finally take it into the match.

And this progression… if you do this 5 minutes a day on an eye coach, or a ball machine… I guarantee your shots will get cleaner, more consistent, and you just might be a star by tuesday.
