The Japanese umbrella was said to be the prototype of what was transmitted from China during the Heian period, and at that time, it was the one that it was not able to close it while opening it.
It has been widely used as a common rain gear since the middle of the Edo period.
At its peak, more than 10 million bottles were produced annually throughout Japan, but with the spread of western umbrellas, the number of Japanese umbrella craftsmen decreased.
