What is a paradigm? What is a paradigm shift?

I like to think of a paradigm as the "accepted knowledge" about something, and a paradigm shift as a major change in our accepted knowledge about something.  For example, the Big Bang is the current paradigm that explains the beginning of the universe, but we might find new data in the future that supports something else, and then there would be a paradigm shift.  Easy-peasy!
