Even though the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is extremely rewarding, I decided to cancel it (or rather…BOTH of them) :D

Here’s why…

1.  I HAVE HILTON HONORS DIAMOND STATUS FOR 4 YEARS 💎
- I originally applied & got approved for the Hilton Aspire card on 3.18.2019.
- Hilton extended all status levels thru 3.31.2023.

2.  I DON’T NEED / WANT WEEKEND NIGHT CERTIFICATES 🎟
- I have enough free night certificates with Marriott and Hyatt.
- Since Hilton free night awards have no restrictions for brand, category, or point value, they’re best used at expensive properties.  At the moment, most of my travels are at mid-scale & upscale properties, so I’d likely get around $150 -$250 of value (which isn’t great for an ‘unlimited value’ free night).  In fact, that’s roughly the value I get from the Marriott & Hyatt certificates, which have capped values.

3.  I FIND THE $250 HILTON RESORT CREDIT TOO RESTRICTIVE 🌴
- Only works at about 270 resort locations (4% of Hilton’s portfolio).  Currently, Hilton has 6,500+ properties.
- Link to Hilton Resorts:  https://www.hilton.com/en/resorts/

4.  I FIND THE $250 AIRLINE FEE CREDIT TOO RESTRICTIVE ✈️
- Only works on 1 airline from a small list of eligible airlines, currently:  Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines, Southwest Airlines & AirTran Airways, United Airlines & Continental Airlines, US Airways)
- Only covers incidental charges (not airfare).
- I cover some incidental charges with airline credit cards.
- I cover other air incidentals with the Amex Platinum Card & Ritz-Carlton Credit Card ($500 total in air incidental credits.

5.  I FIND THE $100 HILTON ON-PROPERTY CREDIT TOO RESTRICTIVE 🏨
- Only works at 2 Hilton brands (Waldorf Astoria & Conrad hotels).
- Requires 2-night minimum stay.
- Does not work for cost of the room.  Only incidentals charged to the room (like food, beverage, spa treatments, etc.)
- Must book via link (HiltonHonors.com/aspirecard) or via phone with code ZZAAP1.
- Must book flexible rate, which may not be the lowest rate.

6.  I DON’T NEED ANOTHER PRIORITY PASS MEMBERSHIP 💳
- Already have this with other credit cards

7.  I DON’T STAY AT HILTON HOTELS OFTEN ENOUGH ✌️
- On average, I have 1 or 2 Hilton stays per year.

8.  I’M NOT FOCUSED ON EARNING HILTON POINTS 🔵
- Plan A = cash back
- Plan B = flexible and/or transferrable travel points (Amex Membership Rewards points, Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Capital One Venture miles, etc.)

9.  I DON’T WANT TO PAY A $450 ANNUAL FEE
Annual fees make the most sense when they:
- Function as a prepayment for benefits you’d normally pay cash for, or…
- Give you discounts on things that would cost more buying directly, or…
- Give you access to things money can’t buy.
The $450 fee missed all 3 of those points for me right now

10.  MAKE ROOM FOR OTHER AMEX CARDS
- Amex usually allows a maximum of 4 – 5 credit cards per person.  I decided to cancel my Hilton credit cards to free up room for new Amex credit cards (e.g. Amex Blue Business Cash).
