From its controversial origins to its impact on the environment, today's video reveals the secrets behind the world's most popular soft drink...

1. The Bottle Design Made It Popular.
In the 1900s, it was fairly difficult to tell Coca-cola apart from its competitors and so in 1915, the company issued a challenge for glass companies to design a "bottle so distinct that you would recognise it by feel in the dark or lying broken on the ground".
A year later, a slimmer version of the winning design became the iconic bottle that truly set Coca-Cola apart from the rest of its competitors.

2. Coca-cola used to be green.
This is like the rumor that Coca-cola used to be marketed as a medicine. It isn't exactly true.
They never claimed it was medicine, but they did used to claim that it could relieve mental and physical exhaustion which is basically what caffeine does anyway.
The claim that Coca cola originally used to be green probably stems from the color of the glass bottles that it came in, Coca-cola since its invention, has always been brown.

3. Coca-cola Always Tastes Different.
All Coca-cola is made with "The Secret formula" and should therefore be identical and taste exactly the same, no matter where it's made, right? But it doesn't!
In the US, they used high-fructose corn syrup as a sweetener, but in Mexico however they use cane sugar, which gives it a different (and some say better) taste.
Packaging also affects the taste of the beverage as does the temperature at which it is produced and stored, which can vary enormously depending on the country it's made in.
One of the biggest variants in taste is actually the water that is used to dilute the syrup. Just think about the difference in taste between cold mineral water and warm tap water.

Typically, restaurants get their soda syrups in plastic bags, but Coca-Cola does something different for McDonald's. The fast-food chain gets its Coke syrup delivered in stainless steel tanks. According to the New York Times, the material keeps the soda fresher, and your tongue can taste the difference.

4. Water waste.
It takes 2.7 litres of water to make 1 litre of Coke.
So where does the excess water go?
In 2014, a Coca-cola bottling plant in India was shut down for using too much water during a drought and leaving farmers without enough for their crops and farmers in South American countries have made similar complaints.

In response to the bad press Coca-cola came up with its "For every drop we use, we give one back" Water Neutrality Project.
But if you take into account the amount of water needed to grow the sugar cane, corn or other sweeteners used and the quantity needed for the packaging, the total amount of water needed to produce a half-liter bottle of coke is around 35 liters.
Making its "For every drop we use, we give one back" project an impossible task and so converting it into the "we'll just do as much as we can" project.

5. Cocaine Controversy
While the Coca-Cola Company denies it, historical evidence suggests that the original Coca-Cola did, in fact, contain cocaine. Created in 1886 by Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton, who modeled the beverage after a French refreshment, coca wine, made by mixing coca-leaf extract with Bordeaux wine. Pemberton mixed coca-leaf extract with sugar syrup instead, to avoid liquor restrictions. He also added kola-nut extract, and Coca-Cola was born. Cocaine, sugar and an extra jolt of caffeine.

6. War Drink
During WWII, Coca-Cola was considered an essential part of the American soldier's diet and was included in their C-rations. This helped to boost the morale of the soldiers and provided them with a taste of home. The popularity of Coca-Cola among soldiers helped to establish it as a national icon and an important symbol of American culture.

7. Coca-cola in Space
Coca-Cola was the first soft drink to be consumed in outer space, astronaut John Young drank it during the Gemini 3 mission in 1965, this made it a historic moment for the brand and the space industry. This event marked the beginning of Coca-Cola's relationship with the space industry and solidified its place as an iconic brand. The company continues to innovate and create new ways to reach its customers, even in outer space.

We hope you learned something new about this iconic brand!
