Creating a Bowl from Beginning to End

Using both Imperial and Metric measurements is unusual, but when studying pottery in Ireland and in the UK, it’s very common. There’s something about a pound weight, (454 grams), which is just so useful, it’s a good size, for a bowl or a large cup, and when we used to use non-digital scales at Maze Hill Pottery, it was faster to aim for a pound weight, rather than specifically 454 grams.

In most cases nowadays, say if I’m throwing 50-60 bowls, I don’t mind if I’m a touch under or above when weighing out clay, some material is almost lost on your hands, so as long as I’m 95% there, I’ll be able to throw all the pots to be exactly the same.

Sweet, simple forms to throw, although making sure the interior shape is the same each time is key, as it dictates how the outside and foot-ring is turned. If there’s inconsistencies, that’s when I trim holes in pots, usually because my interior shape was thrown irregularly compared to all the others.
