The Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) population is increasing in Maine’s Aroostook County.

Lynx have black tufts of fur on their ears and a short, black-tipped tail. They weigh between 17-26 pounds and are about 32 inches long. Although lynx were once considered nocturnal, lynx are actually active during both day and night.

This forest-dwelling cat is found where deep snow and black spruce forest are common. In Maine, lynx are most common in the spruce flats of Aroostook, Piscataquis, and northern Penobscot, Somerset, Franklin and Oxford Counties, where snow depths are often the highest in the state. However, Lynx are a more common sight in northern Maine.
