Jack: But then when, when your parents had to focus on your career to give you the opportunities that they had to, to see that you made the success of yourself that you did, did that put any strain on the family unit?

Pat: You know, you're probably better asking my family that question because I am sure there were times when I got given a lot more than what my brothers or sisters did. I am not sure whether that was mum or dad's support mainly. No one was chasing their career like I was chasing though. I had a brother who tried it for a little bit but nothing like what I did. So my other brothers and sisters were more doing the school, university, becoming accountants or things like that. So I guess in that didn't require as much of my mum or dad's time but it certainly took away from my two younger brothers and the time they spent with mum and dad and my sister who was really close to me in age as well. When you look back in life at that, um, yeah, probably it probably had affected them more than what it did for me.

►About The Thread
Two mates sit down with 10 iconic Australians to figure out how they broke away from the pack. Hugh and Jack seek out leaders of wide-ranging fields: adventure, sport, business, philanthropy, medicine, law and literature to uncover the common thread that binds them.

The interview subjects are household names famed for remarkable and well-told stories, but rarely have they been asked how they did it, how they define success and whether anyone can do what they've done.

Armed with meticulous research and uncomfortably simple questions, we elicit intriguing, inspiring and often unexpected insights from an eclectic bunch of trailblazers.
