Mercedes-Benz presented the new generation of E-Class.
The sixth generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class received new technologies, including rear-wheel drive, a large MBUX screen and much more.
Debuting in 2016, the fifth-generation E-Class (W213) became a showcase for all of the manufacturer's available technologies, and the sixth generation (W214) follows suit. So the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class combines an evolutionary exterior design and old engines with a revolutionary interior filled with screens and cameras – up to five depending on the options chosen.
In February, Mercedes took the odd step of unveiling the new E-Class interior, along with photos and a modest list of features. It was noted that MBUX Superscreen will work in full regardless of the selected E-Class trim level.
The familiar E-Class body shape is retained, but at the front you can see the equalizer effect thanks to a gloss black panel connecting the standard LED headlights. A slightly larger grille is located in the middle, outlined by chrome or additional LED running lights. Digital headlights with a projection function are also available as an option, and at the rear, the neat LED taillights feature triangular star elements. Door handles are standard, and wheel sizes range from 18 to 21 inches.
The screen is very similar to the standard one from the EQE model and includes a separate widescreen driver's display that blends into the central display. Two display styles are offered: sports, which is designed for driving enthusiasts with lots of red lighting and a central tachometer, and classic.
The new E-Class gets optional rear steering that can turn the wheels 4.5 degrees at speeds below 90 km/h. Mercedes notes that this is enough to reduce the turning radius of the sedan by almost 90 mm. At higher speeds, the rear wheels can turn up to 2.5 degrees for added stability, maneuverability and performance.
The feature is available with the optional Technology Package, which also adds an Airmatic air suspension system with continuously adjustable damping. It also maintains the car's ground clearance, and at speeds above 120 km/h lowers the E-Class by just over 15cm for better efficiency and a lower center of gravity.
Under the hood are (almost) the same engines used in the previous E-Class. The E 350 still has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, though it gets a small electric motor to make it a mild hybrid. Power is estimated at 255 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, although an additional 20 hp. available with supercharging function.
The E 450's turbocharged inline-six is still a mild hybrid system, although the power reaches 375 hp. and generates 500 Nm of torque, and, likewise, an available acceleration of 20 hp. Mercedes-Benz doesn't yet have performance and efficiency estimates available, but a plug-in hybrid version won't be offered for the US.
