Kakhovka HPP is the sixth
Kakhovka HPP is the sixth and last in the cascade of hydroelectric power plants on the Dnipro. Until now, the Kakhovka reservoir was the largest in terms of water volume. The Soviet government decided to build a hydroelectric power station in 1950.
In addition to the production of electricity, the hydroelectric power plant had to solve several other issues — to improve navigation on the Dnipro and to become a hydraulic node from which canals will go to irrigate the lands of southern mainland Ukraine and the Crimean peninsula.
People who lived near the Dnipro were resettled in the steppe regions of the Kherson region. Residents of 27 villages had to be evicted from flooded areas. The peasants were forced to dismantle their houses and cut down their gardens so that the bottom of the reservoir was level.
As a result of the construction of the Kakhovka HPP, 257,000 hectares of unique Dnipro flood plains were destroyed, thousands of hectares of arable land and many unexplored archaeological and historical monuments were underwater.
The Kakhovka HPP was fully put into commercial operation on October 19, 1959, and on June 6, 2023, the Russians blew it up, flooding the villages again.
We came to Kherson Oblast to tell the story of the villages that were flooded due to the construction and destruction of the Kakhovka HPP.
