It’s cheap, it’s from China, and it’s supposed to speak NMEA 0183 …

I wanted a low-cost GPS module with antenna that supported the NMEA 0183 protocol. Browsing on eBay I stumbled upon breakout boards with brand name U-BLOX (U BLOX, UBLOX whatever) GPS modules and the required external components.

Of course I do not just unbag the thing. First I have a look at it under the microscope, then I examine the signal levels at different supply voltages with the oscilloscope, and finally I connect it to an Arduino – and it talks, NMEA 0183 no less.

00:00 Intro – two parts in an ESD bag in a foam wrapper in a bag
00:59 Two parts – GPS module with NEO-M8N and GPS antenna
02:00 NEO-M8N module – backup battery, EEPROM, 3.3V regulator
04:28 Dimensions – of GPS module and GPS antenna
05:02 Datasheet – of NEO-M8 series
06:55 Microscope - 24C32 EEPROM and mystery voltage regulator
07:36 Oscilloscope – baud rate, supply voltage and signal levels
10:08 Arduino – connected via the Serial1 UART
14:18 eBay listing – nothing special about it
15:28 Wrap-up – more to come, bye
