To protect a Microsoft Word file with a password, follow these steps:

1. Open the Word document that you want to protect with a password.
2. Click on the "File" tab at the top left corner of the screen.
3. Click on "Info" from the left-hand side menu.
4. Click on "Protect Document" and then click on "Encrypt with Password."
5. In the "Encrypt Document" box that appears, type a password that you will remember.
6. Click on "OK" and then re-enter the password when prompted.
7. Save the document and close it.

Now, when you try to open the document, you will be prompted to enter the password that you set. Without the correct password, the document cannot be opened.
