This is an ancient Egyptian prayer from the book of the dead of Amenhotep, regarding chapter 23.

The prayer calls upon the gods to open the mouth of the deceased so they can live again in the afterlife by eating, drinking, etc.

The wooden object was originally made of iron and it was used ritualistically to touch the mouth of the deceased and open the mouth of the spirit. The instrument is know as a Nw, but as it’s function was called the Dua-Wer.

The tool is meant to resemble the constellation of the big dipper, specifically in the area of Ursa Major, where the imperishable gods lived.
