This week on Wicked Wildlife we take a look at the most notorious snake in Australia, the Eastern Brown Snake
The Eastern Brown snake is found, as its name suggests primarily along the east coast of Australia, with populations also being in western and Central Australia, and Papua New Guinea. Throughout this range the Brown Snake can be found in a wide variety of habitats such as grassland, open forests, agricultural areas and even suburban dwellings where it preys primarily upon mice.
Being a rodent feeder its venom is incredibly toxic to mammals and as such the Eastern Brown Snake ranks as the second most venomous snake on earth, right behind the Inland Taipan. This snakes willingness to live along side human beings, along with its range which covers several capital cities means that the Eastern Brown Snake is responsible for more snake bites then any other species of Australian Snake. Luckily however, only about 20% of bites from this species involve serious envenomation, with the remainder being what we consider to be "Dry Bites"
Despite this, the Eastern Brown Snake continues to be the most common cause of snakebite death of any Australian venomous snake.
