The Carpathians, one of the largest contiguous forest areas of Europe and thus one of the largest CO2 reservoirs on the continent, was our destination in September of this year. The rut this year was constantly changing just like the weather. For those interested, it should be said at this point that the Carpathians are not an easy hunt on flat ground. There are in steep slopes with up to 500 meters climbs. The highest point over sea level was at 1900 meters. Stalks of sometimes more than 3 hours are not uncommon. Without physical fitness nothing works here. The red deer are located in steep slopes and are constantly moving. In contrast to the deer hunting at the typical rutting places in other European countries you might see here only silhouettes of the deer, which makes the hunting additionally exciting. You should only go there with binoculars with a rangefinder, as it always hard to guess distances correctly in foreign terrains. The equipment should be weatherproof, but breathable. Functional clothing is recommended. We advise against cotton, you will surely break a sweat during the long stalks and afterwards might catch a cold. The shoes have to protect the ankles and should be designed for the mountains. Our huntress had shoes from Meindl. Note for your own health: Please always take water (at least 1 liter) with you for a stalk. The body loses a lot of water during the stalking in this hard terrain, which is why inexperienced hunters quickly dehydrate and then have to stop the hunt.
