If you're in the market for a trail-rated crossover with style and substance, the new 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk may be just what you're looking for.
This compact crossover is tough-looking inside and out, and if you crave a little off-road adventure on the weekends, don't worry ... it can hold its own. And with an optional 3.2-liter V6 engine and a locking differential, the Trailhawk can handle most off-road duties with ease.
The advanced all-wheel-drive system and off-road suspension make this SUV more than capable in the dirt. However, it lacks the on-road refinement found in the Grand Cherokee or even the Cherokee Limited.
There is some road noise, but the ride is very smooth. Where the Trailhawk really shines is when you go off-road on bumpy terrain. Off-road agility has been improved thanks to dial-up traction control, short overhangs and a slight suspension lift. The Trailhawk has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, about an inch more than other trim levels. Being trail-rated also means being outfitted with front and rear tow hooks and a skid plate to protect the fuel tank and, of course, look cool. And with the V6's 4500-lb tow capacity, the Trailhawk has plenty of power to pull a full-size boat or camper.
Inside, this SUV has distinctive styling and comfort features, which will be the real draw for most shoppers. We found it to be very comfortable, but make sure to check out the steering position before you buy. The angle may be a bit steep for some drivers.
Even with quality materials inside, the overall vibe is tough and durable. Optional features like heated leather seats, an enormous panoramic sunroof and a heated steering wheel add some luxury to this cabin, if that's what you're after. And we like that the rear seats slide and recline a bit to keep your back-seat crew happy, whether it's your turn to drive to lunch or you're headed out on a cross-country adventure.
Granted, the Cherokee doesn't have an epic amount of cargo space compared to some of its rivals, but the playing field is evened out thanks to its 60/40 split-folding rear seat, fold-flat front seat and power lift gate.
Techwise, the 8.4-inch Uconnect system is pretty flawless and certainly worth the upgrade. It's easy to use, and the center stack is designed to keep everything right at your fingertips.
As for safety, available tech includes adaptive cruise control, park assist, forward-collision warning with auto brake, as well as lane-departure warning and rear cross-traffic alert, many of which come standard on higher trim levels.
The 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is the perfect blend of ready-for-anything styling and off-road capability at a reasonable price.
