: : : Applying Veneers : : :

For my veneer, I tried to get as close to what Brian used on the original guitar. I used 0.6mm thick, quarter sawn, South American mahogany. Also known as "marquetry veneers."

Since I was only able to source this specific variety of veneer in an 11 inch wide roll I had to join a couple pieces together to cover the guitar. For the front face, I used two pieces with a center join, as I've long thought there is a join on the original. For the back, since I couldn't see a join line on the original, I opted to put a full sheet down the middle with two smaller "wing" pieces to cover the outside curves of the body. I also wanted to incorporate Brian's repair job after the guitar sustained damage to the lower section of the body on the back side after surviving a car accident, so another small, half moon shaped strip was used there.

My method of application of the veneer has slightly evolved since I shot this video. Due to a few errors in my build and some unfortunate issues with my clear coat spray, I decided to sand the body down to the raw block board and start again. So my final product will be slightly different. This is my first ever guitar build of any kind, so it's a learning process. I'll also be posting periodic "repair" videos of some of the issues I encountered and was able to recover from.

Big thanks to Doug Short for our seemingly unending collaboration on this build. Check out his build and lots more info here: dsgb.net

Next up is binding and staining!
