The Feast of the Dormition (Dekapentavgoustos) is a profoundly spiritual period in the Orthodox Church, a time when the faithful turn their hearts and prayers to the Virgin Mary with deep reverence. On this beautiful and serene summer evening, the eve of the Dormition of the Theotokos, we find ourselves in the courtyard of the Holy Church of Evangelistria in Nea Ionia, Volos, during the Vespers and the Lamentations Service to the Virgin Mary, presided over by His Eminence, Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias. We witness the faithful forming long lines, approaching with deep piety to venerate the icon of the Virgin Mary. The presence of military honor guards and a large contingent of officers further highlights the significance of this sacred occasion. Meanwhile, in the churchyard, a multitude of visitors listens intently to the service, broadcasted through loudspeakers, filling the air with spiritual solemnity. After taking in the atmosphere around the church, we embark on a broader exploration of the Nea Ionia neighbourhood. Nea Ionia’s history is deeply intertwined with the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the burning of Smyrna, and the forced expulsion of 1.5 million Greeks from Asia Minor in August 1922. The refugees who were violently uprooted from Smyrna and the surrounding areas were the first inhabitants of this neighborhood. Initially, they lived in tents in the Gymnasium area, the old barracks at Rigas Feraios Square, warehouses, and schools. Due to the inhumane living conditions, a decision was made to allocate land northwest of the then-small city of Volos, beyond the Krausidonas stream, extending from 2nd of November Street, to these displaced people. As we walk, we see many of the old refugee houses, hastily constructed to meet the immediate needs of those who arrived from the coast of Asia Minor. We also pass by a few of the traditional tsipouradika restaurants, which are very popular in Nea Ionia among locals and visitors alike. After this brief exploration of the neighbourhood, we return to the Evangelistria Church and take a closer look inside, where the faithful are gathering for the evening service and to venerate the Virgin Mary. We conclude our walk outside the church, admiring the beautiful evening sky and surroundings, while the Lamentations to the Virgin Mary resonate in the background, adding a sacred ambiance to our experience.
