Chemistry Lesson: Introduction to Measurements

Significant figures in measurements are determined by the markings on the device used.  A measurement with more significant figures indicates it is more precise, but not necessarily more accurate.  Accuracy refers to correctness, while precision refers to consistency.  Several practice measurements are made to demonstrate how to record measurements with correct significant figures.

Exact numbers are either defined (1 foot = 12 inches) or obtained through counting.  There is no estimating or guesswork.  Conversely, inexact numbers are measurements and therefore require approximation or estimating.  Accuracy and precision are two ways to evaluate measurements.
