Comuna 13 is a neighborhood located in Medellin, Colombia. Previously, it was known as an area controlled by drug cartels. However, in recent years, Comuna 13 has transformed itself into one of Medellin's most touristic places.
The transformation of Comuna 13 occurred as part of the "Transformation Plan" that began in Medellin in 2002. This plan aimed to restructure the social, economic, and physical aspects of poor neighborhoods in the city.
In the transformation of Comuna 13, local government and civil society organizations played a significant role. They signed many projects to invest in the neighborhood, including expanding streets, opening walking paths, and creating parks and green spaces. Moreover, various events and tourist tours were organized to attract tourism to the area.
However, Comuna 13's most attractive aspect is that it is a place where street art and graffiti culture come to life. Nearly all houses, walls, and streets in the neighborhood are decorated with colorful paints. It is considered one of Colombia's best street art centers. The streets of Comuna 13 are full of works on history, politics, culture, and nature.
Today, Comuna 13 has become one of Medellin's most touristic places. Every year, thousands of tourists visit the neighborhood to enjoy street art, music, history, and culture. The transformation of Comuna 13 is an example of the social and economic renewal plans implemented by Medellin. The neighborhood has turned into a touristic paradise, shedding its former dangerous identity.
