If you’re lucky enough to visit Peru’s Andean cloud forests, you may cross paths with a brightly colored bird with orange feathers and a crest. This is the gallito de las rocas, aka the Andean cock-of-the-rock, or “tunki” in Quechua. This special bird is widely considered the national bird of Peru. Sadly, those seeking to trade the bird’s beautiful orange plumage on the black market have driven down the population. Droughts and destruction of their native forest homes have also threatened the future of this species.
