Chapter 14: Lambda Core - Part One

Against all odds, Gordon Freeman has finally arrived at the Lambda Complex, a full day since he originally set out on his quest. He descends into the facility and meets the surviving members of the science team, who inform him of the Lambda Reactor, a powerful device that is critical to stopping the invasion. To reach the reactor core, he must first navigate the complex and activate its coolant systems, all while the hostile aliens continue to teleport into the facility.

Notes:
- The first elevator can be skipped by jumping off it and "surfing" the walls of the shaft down to the bottom. Keep in mind that minor fall damage will be taken (0:06)
- The parts of the soundtrack from 0:50 to 1:05 is the opening portion of Joel Nielsen's track "Lambda Core", which does not actually play in-game and is something I added in myself
- It is possible to stealth through the first part of the assassin fight in the shipping containers (4:00), as shown in this video from patalogTV: Black Mesa Definitive Edition Walkthr...
- Gordon can simply jump into the coolant at 34:57 to avoid fighting all the enemies

Trivia:
- As with the lift in Chapter 3: Unforeseen Consequences, the initial elevator ride greatly resembles a sequence in the 1984 manga "Akira", which also involved characters descending into a secret research base (0:06). More on this can be found in MarphyBlack's excellent video: Half-Life - Akira References
- The door at 2:41 is inoperable from the outside. In prior versions of the game, it was operable from both sides, and lead to a dead end at the bottom of the elevator. This passageway is to allow players who may have fallen off the elevator prematurely to get out from underneath it if needed
- The assassin encounter at 4:00 was changed in the Definitive Edition to put greater emphasis on navigating the shipping containers. As well, the door that lead to the stairs is now closed and requires some time to open
- The agrunt pulling open the bay doors at 9:49 is a callback to the same sequence in HL1, though in the original game it did this at the start of the loading bay fight rather than at the end
- In HL1, the Test Firing Chamber which houses the Gluon Gun is an optional area (12:14)
- The Gluon Gun (12:44) was internally called the "Egon gun" by Valve due to its resemblance to the proton packs used by Egon in the film "Ghostbusters"
- The "gluon" is a subatomic particle that bind quarks together. Hence, it can be reasoned that this gun causes particles to dissociate instead, resulting in enemies begin gibbed
- In prior versions of the game, using alt-fire on the Gluon would have made Gordon adjust the handle on the weapon. This action did not actually change the weapon's behaviour at all and was replaced with the inspect animation shown at 12:51 instead
- The Gluon gun will gib all regular enemies and scientists/guards alike, aside from Barnacles (and bosses)
- Jumping into any body of water in the Reactor Complex, such as at 15:03, and drowning in the coolant will net players an achievement
- In prior versions, a Zombie torso would drop into the electrical room at 22:24 after Freeman operates the switch
- In HL1, Gordon simply had to activate the pumps in both coolant tanks to get the coolant flowing into the reactor core. In Black Mesa, an additional task to release the emergency drain cap is introduced (24:05)
