Positional chess play describes a strategy in chess where the accumulation of small advantages over time leads in the long run to an advantageous or winning position. This requires patience and good observation abilities. An important aspect of positional play is pawn structure in combination with space. In this series, we will focus on pawn structures, in particular how they can be used in your favour. You will learn the importance of isolated pawns, pawn mobility and the isolated queen's pawn (IQP).

In this video, IM Alex Astaneh will dive into the positional chess play series and you will learn how pawn structures can be considered as the foundation for positional chess. Alex will start with an instructive example and shows how Karpov created a weak isolated pawn in the opponent's position.
