Technically speaking, king crabs are not "true" crabs. They look like crabs, but they aren't classified in the "true" crab infraorder. This is a phenomenon known as carcinization. Learn more king crab facts on this episode of Animal Fact Files!

Scientific Name: Family - Lithodidae
Range: worldwide but most concentrated in northern Pacific ocean
Habitat: bottom of the water column from tidal areas to deep sea
Size: range over 18 pounds (8kg) in weight and have legspans over 6 feet (1.8m) long
Diet: decaying, sea stars, fish, other crustaceans, bivalves, sea slugs, and more
Threats: sea otters, fish, sea worms, etc.
Lifespan: 20 years for Alaskan king crabs but unknown for all species
