Mekici goes by different names throughout regions of Macedonia, however, the result is always the same. A tasty, highly addictive fried dough that can be eaten savoury with feta cheese, ajvar, or just salt, and served with a glass of yoghurt drink or kefir. Or If you like it sweet, slather on some jam or preserves, honey, or a dusting of icing sugar and serve with coffee. These tasty treats will not hang around a long time, so make lots!

YOU NEED:
250 ml milk (or half milk and half yoghurt or kefir or buttermilk)
250 ml lukewarm water
1 sachet of dry active yeast
3 eggs
3 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
500-600 ml oil for frying
1 kg of flour
