This video discusses the beta of a stock in the context of regression analysis.
Beta is the coefficient estimate for the independent variable when a regression is performed with excess market returns as the independent variable and excess stock returns (for the company) as the dependent variable.
For example, if we regress Microsoft's daily excess stock returns (its returns over and above the risk-free rate) on the excess stock returns of the S&P 500, and the coefficient estimate for the independent variable (the excess stock returns of the S&P 500) is 1.25, this means that Microsoft's beta is 1.25. Thus, a 1% increase in the S&P 500 would be expected to result in a 1.25% increase in the stock of Microsoft.—
