This is a nice video that sums up all the major points for writing great dialogue.

Good dialogue gives a story color and makes it exciting. Great dialogue can leave us spellbound.

When attempting to write dialogue, the following techniques can be useful.

Eavesdrop -- try to eavesdrop on the people around you and listen closely to the people you interact with. This is a great way to enhance your dialogue writing skills.

Okay, okay, I know this one can seem a bit obvious and you've probably heard it before. But it's important to not just listen, but focus on the subtleties.

For example, try to notice the difference between men and women; young and old, educated and uneducated. People are different and this is reflected in the way they speak.

Remember, snippets of daily dialogue can give us ideas and help us become familiar with the way people speak.

Great dialogue can really carry a screenplay, even if it's badly written. If you try to sell your script, an agent will read your screenplay and look to see how your story flows and how your dialogue unfolds.

If your script is badly written, but the dialogue is sensational, you might still be able to sell your screenplay (Guy Ritchie did this with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels). Yes, dialogue is that important!

Another useful tip . . .

Mutter to yourself -- try to speak words of dialogue out loud. That way, you can see how dialogue flows. Also, try to focus on keeping it short and concise.

When people speak naturally they usually don't ramble on and on (the more verbally talent among us excluded :). Most people keep their sentences short and simple.

Also, use contractions wherever possible and reduce the amount of adverbs in your screenplay. For example, "Do not attempt to lie to me." Could, and should, be shortened to, "Don't lie to me" or "Don't try to lie to me."

Remember, the better your dialogue, the more entertaining and engaging your screenplay will be, not only when being read by an agent or producer, but when it comes to actually filming your movie for the big screen.
